The Jaguar Cichlid (Parachromis managuensis) is a large, powerful Central American predator named for the striking jaguar-like pattern of black spots and blotches that marbles across its silvery-gold body. As it matures it develops into an impressive, intelligent "monster fish" with serious presence, recognizing its keeper and displaying bold, interactive behavior. Its size, predatory nature, and stunning adult patterning make it a true showpiece for the dedicated large-tank or monster-fish keeper.

  • pH: 7.0–8.5
  • Temperature: 73–82°F (23–28°C)
  • Water Type: Freshwater
  • Tank Size: 125+ gallons (single adult); larger for pairs or communities
  • Temperament: Aggressive
  • Tank Mates: Other large, robust cichlids (Oscars, large Central Americans), big plecos, and similarly sized tankmates only
  • Max Size: ~14–16 inches
  • Diet: Carnivore (quality large cichlid pellets, frozen and fresh proteins, krill, earthworms; avoid feeder fish for health reasons)

Notes: A predatory, territorial cichlid that grows large and needs serious filtration and tank volume to thrive. Provide robust rockwork and hardscape, securely arranged, as adults will rearrange decor. Highly aggressive, especially when breeding, and should only be housed with tankmates that can hold their own; many keepers maintain them singly or as an established pair. Not a community fish, but for the right keeper an intelligent, rewarding centerpiece predator.
